This book explains this step by step so that by the end of it you can build a simple interface for IOS. The reason why I gave it 2 stars is because I don't think its worth the price. The entire book could have been written as a blog or a free PDF. The app that you build just uses static data and has very basic user interaction. The book itself is very thin, has giant font and lots of pictures. Aka it doesn't have that much in the way of information. At the end of the book you are more familiar with the graphical interface in Xcode that you can use to create a Storyboard, but that's no where near what you need to build a real app. On the up side it's much easier to follow. I think I did the entire book in a day or two.In contrast I bought the BigNerdRanch's book on IOS Programming. That is loaded with info. In the first chapter alone you build a simple app and deploy it to your phone. In another chapter you learn how to create an app that allows you to set a reminder using a date picker and notify the user. But the downside there is that it's much much harder to follow. I spent about 5 weeks on the first BigNerdRanch book and I expect that I will spend 5 weeks on the IOS programming one. It's frustrating but it sets me up better to be a developer at the end of it.In summary, this book eases you into app development, but it has very little in the way of content to justify the $15. I'm sure the other books in the series keep adding to your skill set. But for me, I would rather buy a more expensive book that frustrates me but puts me on the path of self sufficiency faster.

I have a rule that I do not buy any reference books in digital form. I like the ease with which I can flip through a paper book. After reading the reviews for this one, I decided to buy the digital because it seemed like more of a walkthrough than a guide. Fortunately, the digital form is smooth and I don't feel I missed out.Nice content:The walkthrough was very easy to follow and the entire process took me less than 3 hours. At the end, I actually exclaimed aloud (to myself) "Wow, that's pretty freakin' cool." The finished product looked great and some of the techniques were nice implementations.ConsMy only gripe while working through the process was that I got error messages on 2 separate occasions while compiling the code. I had followed the instructions completely. It seemed some parts of the book were based on older versions of Xcode. I had to Google the error message to see how to fix it.Worth it?I'll echo the other reviewers in reminding everyone that this is a process to help you get comfortable with laying out the GUI. Your app will not really do much because there's no code. There also could have been at least one more example layout to work through. It was all over way too quickly. I feel somewhat cheated because this book would have been a great starting point to a book about the actual coding process. As a stand-alone $10 purchase I'm torn as to how I feel. Had the author and publisher been slightly less greedy and packaged this info together with the other book, they could have charged an extra $5 for that book and had people who were huge fans. Instead they get reviews such as this one, which give people pause for thought. Luckily, while reading a sample from their 2nd book, Apple announced Swift, so I'll be migrating to that instead of Objective C.ConclusionThe example app was nice and the process was smooth. Just one more example app using a different layout process would have made me feel much better about the purchase.

I have been going through every book available to me at my library on the subject of building iPhone apps. Every single one starts off with the presumption that I know something about Objective C programming language, even when it says that I don't have to know anything about Objective C to understand the subject matter. I thought that this book "Diving Into iOs" would probably be the same. Sure it says that I don't have to understand Objective C to understand how to create apps and function in Xcode... we shall see.It is completely true. You do not have to understand Objective C or Xcode to begin to understand the lessons in this book. Through this book you gain a basic understanding of how Xcode works, how iOS apps are built, and where the Objective C fits in.A few times I thought that I was getting stuck and not understanding the lesson, but I found that if I pushed forward just a little bit the whole lesson would come together and I'd understand what was being taught.I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn how to create Apple apps. I've returned all my library books and now using only this series on my Kindle to learn how to build Apple apps. I'm now on Book 2 "Flying with Objective C" and it appears to be (I'm only a few chapters in) to be just as excellent as "Diving Into iOS".

This book is just unbelievable. Amazing book written by a very inspiring developer and teacher. At one point I felt directly thanking Kevin Mcneish for releasing such an easy to learn book, which I will do via twitter. This book makes absolutely no assumption that you have had previous experience with Xcode, programming, or even a mac. I havent seen such a step-by-step book in my life, because by using this book you will never get lost in between while developing the project. There isn't even one point in the book where you will not understand. Every step is crisp and clear and repeats the same step even though it was written before. Moreover, there are videos in every chapter to illustrate each step in case you havent understood/missed something. Personally I never felt the ned to look at the video(which is also well explained), since the written instructions were so easy and clear. I highly, highly, highly recommend this to anyone who wants to take the first step in creating apps for iOS or even for those who have interest in creating a simple app. As it is said, this book was tested by many beta readers and it is very thoroughly made. This product shouldn't be having 4.5 stars, this should clearly be getting 5 stars easily!! Trust me and you wont regret a penny.
