I really enjoyed this collection of books by Janette Oke....I am watching "When Comes the Heart" on Hallmark channel and this inspired me to read the books... sad to say the tv show is loosely based on the book... I wish they had been more like the book.
We have watched the TV series, which so far is different than the book content, but the books come alive with wonderful writing. The text flows from one page to another effortlessly and it is as if I was with Elizabeth as she wrestles with decisions and fears and challenges of the frontier western Canada. It is a Grand series.
Janette Oke is one of the best family authors of our time, or unfortunately a little before it. She has ended her writing career... This is my second favorite collection of her writings. I fully trust the will end up as Hallmark Movies if they haven't already. Each one deals with a central character, a woman, in the Canadian West of the 1850s to 1930s I believe. They are or become Strong Women because of their growing faith in God, their dependency on Him and their willingness to share what He has done for them. Through the trials they undergo we are given a much less painful way of learning the lessons they learned. These are Oke's writing examples of how we can live our lives, sharing our testimony. For me, these tales reinforced the message of Romans 8:28. All things happen for good to them who love the Lord and are called according to His purpose."
Oh my goodness! I love this series sooooo much!! It is so sweet, clean and wholesome. I also really love that it is Christian based! I have read a couple of her novels and have thoroughly enjoyed them! The very first book in the series follows very closely with the movie it is based off of with exception to Elizabeth the niece being in it. The only thing I don’t like is the fact the names are reused such as Elizabeth. There’s an aunt, mom and niece that all have the same name. The sisters are also reused making it more confusing. I understand that it may have been popular back then to carry a name throughout the family because it had special meaning or what not though, within the series it does become quite confusing. Other than that I really love the series and look forward to reading more of her books!! â¤ï¸
I love Janette Oke books. I mainly ordered this kindle set because I have the first 4 paperback books, but I'd never seen or read the last 2 books that she wrote later. I wish there were more authors and books like hers, so wholesome and clean. And they speak of our Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus! Thank you, Janette Oke! I, for one, appreciate all your inspirational work! God Bless you and your family!!!
This was a very good series (with the exception of the beginning of Book 4). However, I did NOT like the ending. I felt it was rushed. I did like the build up of who the main character decides to marry. I first thought she would go with Maurice b/c she wanted to go back to the North. Then I thought for sure she would go with the new minister towards the end of the series. Utter shock that she chose the doctor after he rushed the relationship and she didn't feel comfortable with his family and all their wealth. I just don't think their relationship was solid or well developed.
This is a strong story of family, commitment and faith. The characters are your friends by the end and you really don't want the story to end. I was expecting a duplicate of the TV series, but found much more in these books. A much stronger story and stronger characters. I loved the read.
I love this series, and was delighted to learn that it is now six books and not the four that I had read years ago. I love both the strength of the women, and their dedication to their Christian faith. Lovely books.
