I am a fan of the authors style. This is book definitely for Cocos2d-x beginners. I recommend to anyone new to programming to pay attention to the setup section and only download/install what he suggests at the time of his writing.
This book showed me that the code doesn't need to be too complicated to make a good and fun game. This version of Cocos2d-x is much more simple, if you never have tried in a game project before, you can be happy, is the right time to use it, this framework is mature, easy to understand, with a ton of resources to learn how it works, a big variety tools to do more in games and publish, but, if you already know how this framework works or if you are an experienced game developer, this book will show you how good and easy can be make really good games, the examples showed in this book are full of functionalities to make great games, you can translate your knowledge easy and fast, this framework support C++, JavaScript and Lua, the main focus on the book is C++ and show how easy is to do cool effects with the games, in the last example he makes a kind of super loved by mobile gamers in Lua. In the first chapters he teaches how to install and the basics of the framework, he also gives examples of tools that he use and are recommended to create spitesheets, particles, bitmap fonts and sound effects. If you already know C++ or another Object Oriented programming language, I think that the examples will show you the framework in a way that you will not be scared by the code, but if you've never used C++ or another Object Oriented programming language... this can be hard, but if you read again the book become easy, the examples showed are clear, you will take it. All the effort will be worth on you first game done, when you play something that you've made is one of the best things, all you need to start is on the book learn by examples mix some techniques and practice more and more, as soon as you can imagine your games will be good to show to your friends and make some money. I liked that the examples are simple, the code is explained block by block, game features that you and your users appreciate are showed and the examples explain how to work with physics Box2D and Chipmunk, particles, primitive draws, touch, collision and much more. This book is totally recommended if you want to learn or if you want to take advantage of the framework to make professional games.
OK, so I had the previous version of the book which was written for the version 2.x of Cocos2d-x. This book is actually probably the only good book on cocos2d-x out there. At least, I have not been able to find anything else that comes close in quality of instruction. I started with Cocos2d-x about about 2 years ago and very quickly got lost in exactly how to start. Cocos2d-x is open source and the documentation on the Cocos2d-x website is horrendous to say the least. Don't get me wrong, the framework itself is pretty amazing, it is just that getting started with it is very hard since on the web you are going to find snippets that target various versions of the framework, use classes that have been deprecated and so on. When I got this book, I finally had a resource that I could learn from properly. However, the previous version of the book got dated as the Cocos2d-x community released v3.x which changed quite a few things including event handling, change in class names, again deprecating a lot of classes (why do they keep doing that????). Still, there was nothing better than the previous version of the book available for learning.Finally, when I saw the new version of the book, I jumped on it. The book has been updated to v3.x and although it talks about iPhone based development mostly, since Cocos2d-x targets all platforms (the x in the name refers to the cross platform), I could make it work in Windows Phone without changing a single line of code. The code samples provided with the book compile clean, and the author has even helpfully gives a "starting project" and a "end project" so you can compare with it if you get the code wrong. To be clear, the code comes from the website of PACKT and is not included with the book itself, but in this age of Internet, I actually prefer that since the author can update the code if he finds something wrong and I can get the latest.Finally, here is a list of things I like about the book:1. Very clear and methodical description of what is happening where. The author will provide code snippets, explain them a bit at the time and then provide a "What just happened" section recapping everything you did. Very helpful.2. The code samples work great. This is absolutely necessary for a coding book.3. Targets the latest version of the Cocos2d-x framework which is awesome.4. I bought the book from PACKT directly since I also wanted an ebook version. I got the PDF immediately to read while the paper copy was on the way.5. There simply IS NOTHING that comes even close to the quality of this book for Cocos2d-x. If not for this book, it would have been a really long, arduous and head scratching process to learning Cocos2d-x.Cons:Can't really think of any cons really. Maybe, they should start distributing candy with it :)
I have been using Cocos2d-x for the past 7 year, it has changed considerably during these years and I always welcome a good reference to the new API's and tools that are available.The previous version of this book was valuable to me at the time as the cocos2d-x website was going through lots of changes and it was difficult to find the information I needed and having the book handy provided a great reference. This new edition covering cocos2d-x v3.x updates everything to the new API and demonstrates very well how to use the API and the new features added.This second edition includes added examples so there is now a wide range of examples to help the beginning game developer get started on their future hit game. The game examples are Air Hockey, Sky Defense, Rocket Through, Victorian Rush Hour (infinite side scroller game), Eskimo, and Mini Pool to demonstrate the built in physics engine.Each game expands on the capabilities of cocos2d-x, the source code is available on the publishers website and can be used to get a jump start on your own project.
