+ The work of Edwards is flawless. The long trains of thought, and puritan sentence structure tend to put off most modern readers, and some of it is a bit like reading a math equation, but the logic is impeccable.- Some editting errors leave me shaking my head too often. It would not be so bad if they weren't so numerous. I bought this print for a semi-Pelagian friend, and I am afraid to give it to him because some of the errors are embarrasing. I will try to find a more carefully editted version of this classic work to give.
Item was a gift to an unbeliever, hoping it might clarify an understanding of Free Will and whether to accept or deny Jesus as Lord of their life. No verdict yet, but that is her choice. At least, she has this and other materials to help make a choice and leave it at that.
I am a "polyreader" in that unlike serial readers, I am usually reading 2 or more books at a time independent of my Bible reading. As such, it took me several months to get through this book while I began and finished several others. It was not the length of the book but it's complexity and profundity that made it necessary for me to read slowly, re-read sections. Often times I had to stop and meditate on what I just read. While I hesitate to say it is a difficult read I am confident in saying it most certainly is not a casual read. Because of the mental rigor required of me to follow and understand Edward's argumentation, I would often forego choosing Freedom of the Will in favor of my other reads that where less demanding. I did not simply want to get through this book I truly wanted to thoroughly understand Edward's argumentation so I would say I was more studying Freedom of the Will than simply reading it. This is why it took me months to get through it.Nevertheless, I was completely fascinated with the sheer brilliance of Edwards and thoroughly enjoyed the book. While I had read on the subject of human will and volition this was the first and only book I read on the subject. I am thankful that this was my first serious read on the subject as I found it confirming, reassuring and enlightening concerning my views of human and divine will. Edward's refutation of the Arminian, and shall I say, the more common notion of free will is simply brilliant. His cogent and thorough responses to stated and anticipated objections to the Calvinist position are well reasoned and explained. I recommend this book to anyone who truly endeavors to understand the nature of the will and it's relation to free moral agency and determinism.
Good stuff but a little dense and the language is hard to understand at times. This book was written in the early 1700's before the revolution so the language is dated. Mr. Edwards' style also makes comprehension a little more challenging also. If you can get past the language issues he has a lot of great points. This book was written to counter arguments made by another man so not having read the initial material that this book answers makes it hard to follow the rebuttal at times.Overall worth reading!
This volume merely a print out of the Edwards' work online, and it's incomplete! There is no info on edition, publication, no title page, etc, so it is impossible to site. It stops at Part IV section 7, and does not print the rest! The volume does not even mark section numbers and part numbers... It is very frustrating when there is no way to reference the work when you're writing a paper.

Jonathan Edwards through his divinely gifted intellect leads the reader into a purely reasoned exposition of freedom of will based on nature and necessity rather than the Arminian defense that for the will to be truly free it must not be influenced or constrained by necessity. He concludes his argument powerfully by illustrating that God's will being totally shaped by the necessity of his holiness and immutability of course does not detract one iota from His virtue, and so the greater necessity of man through his nature and moral influences toward virtue or vice does not detract all from his free will nor diminish the praise deserved for his virtues or the condemnation for his vices.
Wonderful to read the amazing teaching.
