The five editors cover 12 subjects and all 12 subjects are, I think, spot-on. Thematically, this book has real value. However, the individual editors are hit-or-miss; Lakin is probably the strongest of the whole. My only gripe is that all five editors seem to favor a specific style of writing that isn't necessarily the best style for beginning authors to emulate. The highly emotive blend of third-person narration with first-person mental asides pervades the examples. But this style isn't exactly the only one out there and some editors (including me!) rarely accept submissions presented with the structure and voice recommended by these authors. This book is good for intermediate-level authors who want some insight into how to tune their prose; they should know enough to so separate the wheat from the chaff. Experienced authors will likely find little that they don't already know, and novice authors may find value provided they're not led astray by the monochromatic brush the editors use to paint "good" prose on the authorial canvas.
I've had a rough draft in the drawer for 2 years -- yes, two years! -- and was stuck in editing quicksand because I knew it wasn't quite right, but I didn't know why or how to fix it. This book helped me break through the barriers.I'm not one to take notes, but I took quite a few while reading this book. And in case you're wondering if reading 12 Fatal Flaws is a tedious task, let me assure you, far from it. It was a joy to read. Giving clear Before and After examples is an especially helpful method for those of us who need to see the difference in order to understand the difference.
I couldn't say enough great things about the way this book covers topics like white space, POV shifts, plotting, over and underwriting. Several points that I had struggled with were made clear. A good book to take down and read once or twice a year to keep yourself honest as a writer. Avoids some unwieldy concepts by providing a before and after text to illustrates the editors points. One of my favorite books on fiction writing.
If you want to write a good novel, don't miss out on this book! One of the best books I have ever read all about the flaws that will kill your fiction every time. Suzanne Lakin and her 4 associates show you everything you need to know about what not to put in your fiction. Between the ideas you will find here and the great Before and After examples, you'll be well on your way to writing the good stuff. Don't forget to print out those checklists too.
The flaws these authors cite are spot on. However some of the 'bad' writing samples seemed too obvious and trite, and occasionally the 'good' writing samples were not much better than the 'bad'. So 5 stars for hitting the nail on the head on the fatal flaws, and 3 for the examples. For a book covering the same topics, but with more elegant examples, try Self-Editing for Fiction Writers by Renni Browne and Dave King
This book has already transformed my writing more than any other book I've read----more than any class I've taken. Showing the examples of when it's done wrong and when it's done right, was exactly what I needed. I have struggled for years to understand why my writing stays very much on the page----no leaping off it whatsoever. Practicing the techniques in this book was not only fun, it has completely changed the way I approach my writing! I am definitely going to read every other book in The Writer's Toolbox Series.
This is a great book for beginners and those who are not beginners. It is full of examples of what you should not be doing. I see books every day that are full of these errors. It is well written from the viewpoint of established writers and editors who know the writing craft. It contains checklists for reviewing your writing and is a great resource.
An essential book for the budding writer, this publication provides sound advice and instruction. My only quibble is with several of the examples provided by the authors for hands-on writing exercises. Since several of the examples were apparently generated by the authors and not third party writers, the reader is faced with correcting works that are out of context with the larger story line. Tackling a few of the exercises was a bit like diagnosing a car malfunction after the vehicle was partially disassembled! However, this book was overall a good buy.
