About the Author
Born in 1927 in Orlando, Florida, Bradford B. Van Diver lived in New York state until age 18. He graduated from the University of Colorado where he began a history of rock climbing, initiating first ascents on Longs Peak and the Flatirons with his climbing partner. He earned his PhD from the University of Washington. He taught at the Universities of Colorado, Washington, as Guest Professor at Munich, Germany, and retired as emeritus professor of geology at SUNY Potsdam where he taught for 24 years. He was the author of six books, primarily for the laymen, one of which was a photographic album of geology as art. He was an avid photographer, mountaineer, hiker, woodworker, kayaker, skier, and world traveler. He was a member of the Adirondack Mountain Club, the Colorado Hiking Club, and the Carolina Mountain Club as well as a member of the Adirondack 46ers and the AMC 111 Club, a group that has climbed all 111 peaks in the Northeast over 4000’. He was a long-term member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Canton, NY and of the Asheville Church.

Have you ever driven through New York State and have wondered where all those varying rock formations came from? Believe it or not, but New York was a rockin' place for last 500,000,000 years - earthquakes, towering mountains, sandy beaches, and deep oceans...and all of this happened north of New York City!This book is a great introduction to the world of geology in New York, and it covers the roads many of us travel daily. It does help to have some prior knowledge of eras, periods, and epochs...however these are all outlined before you get to the preface of the book, so study these before diving in to read about your part of the state.This, and other books like it, make for great learning if you are just traveling through with children under 18. You may end up taking roads other than the Thruway!

I love all the Roadside geology books.
A very interesting and fact-filled guide to the geology of New York. The writer provides a wealth of information about the highly varied topography of New York state, as well as geohistory and biology. Lots of highly descriptive explanations of the different features encountered on the state roadways, with local features of interest, for good measure.Great book!
An interesting read but some of it seems a little dated.
Copyrighted in 1985 but it is very useful and informative today. I wish there is a similar book of every state. I bought this book and Geology of New York, A simplified Account, 2000 by Isachsen et al together. I like the pictures and descriptions better in Geology of New York. These two books complement each other.
Interesting book. I travel around quite a bit and seen some of these areas. Good information on make up of these areas. A must have for a new rock hound, young or old.
