I have read many (too many) books on the Camino. I've also done two Caminos, but not the Camino Frances, the most popular route to Santiago. Katherine Soper writes about her Camino experience in a thoughtful, light way. This is a memoir based on her diaries with a good dose of reflection and history as well. The author isn't religious or even very spiritual and she's not shy about saying that. The experience for her is about people - the kindness of people, not strangers, since there aren't any strangers on the trail.
I really enjoyed every single page of this book. I'm reading several books about the Camino de Santiago and this has been my favorite so far. Her descriptions are beautiful and her observations of her fellow Pilgrims were astute. She strikes me as not only a very accomplished person but a very likable person. She shared a lot of her own deep, personal feelings with her readers – her strengths and her vulnerabilities.I felt that I was with her every step of the Camino!Great book if you're interested to learn more about the Camino de Santiago.
Want to experience the Camino de Santiago de Compostela but don’t have the time or wear-with-all? Did Shirley McClain’s adventures or the movie “The Way†peak your curiosity? Katharine Soper’s realistic account of her 40 day, 500 mile pilgrimage of walking across northern Spain is a compelling read. Buffeted by a series of life altering events, Soper is drawn on a quest for simplicity and perspective. She leaves family and the comforts of modern day life behind to embark on not just a historic hike through the countryside, but a spiritual, life changing journey. Soper imparts considerable practical information regarding the pilgrimage without preaching. A map of the route complete with a scale of elevations of various towns prepares you for the ups and downs physically as well as emotionally. From the agony of blisters, tendonitis and hostel snorers to the ecstasy of a hot bath, soft hotel bed, and hearty meal, Soper draws you into her journey like a fellow pilgrim. She intermittently shares the path with other pilgrims whose stories are skillfully woven throughout. Each chapter ends with a quote from her pilgrim’s passport, adding or validating wisdom gleaned along the way. Rebecca Solnit’s quote sums it up “Exploring the world is one of the best ways of exploring the mind, and walking travels both terrains.â€
This woman is just so...typical. Underweight, a victim of marketing, a believer that being busy is a badge of honor. (She played by all of the rules.) So, coming from this incredibly unaware, unenlightened place, she writes what she thinks is a radical and profound journal of her long walk. It's neither radical nor profound. This book may be helpful or mildly eye-opening for materialistic, unenlightened, young souls. It is not interesting or revelatory to people farther along in their spiritual journeys.
The effectiveness of any memoir depends on how the author (and editor) transcend the incidents and people in the book and create a more overarching theme that incorporates the reader. Katherine Soper has really done this nicely. Of the 3 memoir/accounts of pilgrim walks on the Camino that I have now read, this is the one to read if you are interested and would like to feel the reality well.It is no surprise that it took a long time for her to write it and I deeply appreciate that. I leave on my own Camino in September and feel that I am more empowered to take it on because of her skillful sharing
As I plan my own Camino (at the same age she did hers), I read this with interest, looking for clues and what to expect. I became so wrapped up in her story, the pace, the insights, the journey, I didn’t put it down all day, and was as disappointed as she was to arrive at Santiago and the end of the book.
While considering a journey on the Camino. I found Katherine Soper's honest, heartfelt memoir. She relates the trying, yet achingly beautiful, experiences of her solo 500-mile walk to Santiago. Along the way she meets fellow pilgrims who add richness and compassion to her month on the road. I'll remember her words as encouragement as I venture there.
I have read perhaps 20 books on the Camino and recently finished three sections in 2016. This I is a wonderful story encompassing the practical and spiritual experience one may expect from a pilgrimage. I am happy to report that they have upgraded the Compestela offices in Santiago and us less stressful.
