Full disclosure, there’s a reason why one of the authors and I have the same last name. And for the sake of fairness, this should be shown as a verified purchase as I have bought copies to send to friends. That said, The Club goes way beyond soccer – or football, as the rest of the world calls it specifically to confuse Americans. It’s also goes further than just a business book, detailing a crazy enterprise where winning is huge and losing is death, albeit more politely couched in the term "relegation". (Imagine the misery of sending my Mets down to the Grapefruit League. Although, on second thought...) What The Club does, and does so brilliantly, is tell a compelling story with fabulous characters. It reads like a great novel and is easily on par with Liar’s Poker and Barbarians at the Gate. Who knows, maybe someday someone will turn this into a film, or a six parter for Netflix/Prime. It’s worthy, because the three elements that make up a great film... and for that matter a great book... are 1) a great story, 2) a great story and 3) a great story. And The Club is just that, a great story... told greatly.
When I read the first edition of Soccernomics 5 or 6 years ago, I didn't think I could like a book about football as much. And true to form, I haven't since. But this book was incredible. Well-written, funny, interesting, and full of so many things I didn't know! For PL die-hards, reading this book is a little like reading a book after you've seen the movie: you spend a lot of time like "I remember that!" and being excited (or heart-broken) to relive some pieces of your club's history, anticipating a build-up to some key events in Premier League history, BUT you find out SO MUCH backstory, it's fascinating!Now I'm reading the 3rd edition of Soccernomics, and it doesn't feel as good as the first two versions, but ONLY because The Club was so good it simply eclipsed it.Hard recommend this book to any football fans, and even to people who know nothing about football.

Hitherto, even the big clubs were camped in out-of-date and cramped stadiums; what more the lesser clubs?In comes big money, and the stories and events that led to the breakaway Premier League is absorbing. The authors tell of the dreams and inspirations of clubs and managers in the new profit-centred football world - how Fulham dreams of becoming 'Manchester United of the South'. England has become a place for 'a billionaire with some cash to park abroad and a taste for the adulation of large crowds'.All this brings problems, not just money problems, of which the authors have a thing or two to say, but more importantly on the pitch. Recall player power that ousted you-know-which one? Now the same is threatening Sarri of Chelsea. The authors quote Arsene Wenger: Modern football has been defined by players searching for more and more freedom. And that coincides with more and more individualism... As soon as a guy's personal interests don't line up with the team's, he gets bored'.The book tells us why the big six find Leicester City's victory in 2016 unacceptable. They need to keep the money pot of 'golden tickets' to themselves. Well written & intriguing read into the marketing machine that is the English Premier League, how they cribbed much of their strategy from the US leagues like the NFL & drove passion from beyond neighborhoods in England & Wales into an international tribal declaration by people all over the world who've never set foot in the country. Adopting a Premier League team is one thing; knowing its history (which for some teams is quite checkered) & how it got to the status it currently enjoys is another & this is an informative & enjoyable look into "how the sausage gets made".
Like the title states, I really enjoyed this book. It was extremely informative, but also captivating. Definitely recommend it you want to know more about the ins and outs of the Premiere League.
