For anyone who has experienced loss of a baby, or for those who have a loved one who has experienced loss, I highly recommend reading this book. For anyone who has experienced loss of any kind, I highly recommend reading this book. This author shares her personal journey of loss and grief. She addresses how loss can impact siblings, couples, the grieving mother, and offers insight and wisdom for supporting those who have suffered loss. This book contains Scripture, and it never comes across as "preachy" because she is so open and raw in sharing her journey. Grief is almost a societal taboo. At best, it's acknowledged, and after an "acceptable" amount of time, we're expected to move on. Yet we've been forever changed. What freedom to experience grief, to share our experiences, and to comfort and be comforted by the sharing. There is indeed lasting hope, restoration, and healing through God who values and loves us beyond our comprehension. Every life matters.
Expressing myself with words is not my thing...that is Kelly's gift, which is very apparent in this book. "As we go through our lives we are given many precious gifts, some we are allowed to enjoy for a long time, others only briefly." Having walked a similar road this book pretty much hit the nail on the head. It was books like this that I searched for after our loss, stories from those who have walked in our shoes, those who knew our pain, those who helped us know we were not alone. Kelly put into words what so many of us were feeling, but were unable to express She opened her heart and shared her great pain to help others see there is hope after loss and that there is no right or wrong way to grieve. It has many ups and downs. But, ultimately it was her Faith and our God that saw her through her darkness. Filled with scripture and Bible verses, this book brought me to tears and then joy. I would highly recommend this book to any mother or father who has lost a baby, parents and grandparents of those moms and dads, and friends who are just trying to understand the pain their friends are going through. Through this great pain Sufficient Grace Ministries was born, Kelly was called to do this work, to bring comfort to those grieving, to offer hope, to give them items to hold in their empty aching arms, to be there, to listen, to love these baby's as they enter and leave this earth so quickly and quietly. Thank you Kelly for sharing your story, you truly are a blessing. I'm honored to call you a friend.
I enjoyed reading Kelly's book so much that I couldn't put it down and finished it in one day. I knew her story from meeting her through her blog, but I really loved reading her book as she elaborated on what she was feeling and how The Lord carried her through this journey that seems impossible that any mom should ever have to walk. I love how she included so many of the scriptures that related to what she was going through and that helped her during those times. I think this book would be an incredible resource for anyone faced with losing a child, or really for anyone going through grief. It is also a story of just the incredible love The Lord has for each of his children, that he never leaves us or forsakes us. I admire Kelly so much for being the hands and feet of Jesus as she walks through and ministers to others facing the loss of a child, through her non-profit, Sufficient Grace Ministries. This book is beautifully written, honest, and I think would be a great encouragement to anyone who is wondering if The Lord is still good, even in the midst of incredible suffering. He is. And Kelly's story is a beautiful example of that.
Sufficient Grace is so much more than an account of the events that occurred in the Gerkens' life. It is a true story of life and loss that so many remain others who have been through similar cannot or do not feel allowed to talk about. This book breaks the silence of baby and infant loss, and shares the deep emotions involved in the grieving and healing processes. Not only does Sufficient Grace explore these feelings of grief, but Kelly also shares that in time through faith and grace that God can and will make all things beautiful. I am thankful that through God, the brief life of the Gerken babies (Faith, Grace, and Thomas) and so many others born far too soon or given a diagnosis of incompatible with life, that they are honored through Sufficient Grace Ministries. Sufficient Grace is not only an amazing book, but a wonderful organization which walks with families through their darkest hours. This book should be read by all who have experienced the loss of a baby at any stage of pregnancy, or those who had babies whose lives here on earth were brief, and it should also be read by all of those who are birth professionals.
We just lost our beautiful little granddaughter to stillbirth on May 21, 2016 and we are heartbroken!! It was such a shock to our family, but I can't say enough about Sufficient Grace Ministries. They were there for us taking beautiful photos and giving of their resources. I never dreamed that the night before as we were celebrating our son and DIL's 10th anniversary that baby Eden would be gone the very next day. Nothing prepares you for the profound grief! God bless Kelly and her team for making a beautiful difference that this grandma will always remember!!
This book is a must read for anyone who has experienced pregnancy or infant loss. If you are fresh in grief or years have passed you can still relate to this and be touched by Kelly's story. It is beautifully written, real and unscripted.
Kelly takes you there, where she was. Her words make you feel like you are right there in that room, right there with her. She opens her heart to share with all of us about the true nitty gritty details about loss and love. This book is for everyone, not just ones that have had a loss. Its for the people lost in in their lives. And most important she points us all back to God and through Him he has turned her story into hope. Isaiah 61:3: "To give them beauty for ashes"
