I reviewed Fodor's guide to las vegas 2010, the Unofficial Guide to Las Vegas 2010, and Frommer's Las Vegas 2010.Hands down, I liked Fodor's the Best. I liked Frommer's probably the least. It is also the shortest book of them all. I felt the information presented was much less detail than the other books, especially sample itineraries, day trips, side trips, trips with kids, and show information. I did not do any in depth reviews of where to stay as I am staying at a time share--however, the layout and pictures included in Fodor's is much more appealing.If you haven't been to Las vegas before and are looking for a guide--start with either of the 2 other books and you will probably be happier. Or, you can do what I did and purchase all 3. However, the only one I am using is Fodor's as it is the most complete for what I was looking for.
Frommer's is always a great choice when traveling. This books lists restaurants by taste, selection and price. It lists things to do for free in town. It also vividly describes the shows Vegas has to offer, which is helpful when trying to narrow your show selection down to the top choices. And, the book also has overall area maps and detailed, up-close maps that label the restaurants, free things, and shows it talks about. The slightest complaint I have with this book is that the writers sometimes seem snooty when describing restaurants. Sometimes, I just want to know how the food tastes, not how the place looks. Resoundingly, overall, I highly recommend this book.
Great update for Las Vegas 2010. Tropicana is described as under renovation andmay or may not be great. Very complete. Maps of all the main areas of Las Vegas.This is definitely a bargain for the price.
Although this guide is not quite as up to date and detailed as the others it is well written and fun to read. And the chapter on gambling by James Randi is worth the price alone!
I was very disappointed with Frommer's Las Vegas 2010. They used the same pictures, maps, etc. as they did for previous editions. They added a few new facts, but it is basically the same book that I first purchased, Las Vegas 2007. There have been many changes in Las Vegas in 3 years and to publish a book including incorrect maps of the strip is not what I would have expected from Frommer's.
This is the best travel book I have had! So much information and very up to date.
What a disappointment. Yes, you can make the argument that most of the information here is still relatively accurate, but this book has basically not been updated in several years. Oh, they added a snippet here and there, but as a whole, it's basically the same. For instance, in the Gambling section, there is NO mention that a great deal of the casinos are moving to Blackjack games that pay 6:5 instead of 3:2 on a blackjack hand: that is really useful information, and I am here to tell you that if you are going to provide a section on gambling, you should talk about what places offer the best odds.There is a brief section of how Vegas has been especially hard hit by the economic downturn in the introduction, but beyond that, nothing. The review of Red Rock Casino and Resort has remained the same for the last several years: great place but so very very very expensive. Well, I can tell you that this place is very reasonable now, but reading this guide, one would never know that.Shame on Frommers.
Have always been a fan of the Frommer's guides. They contain simple reviews and itineraries that provide a great start for planning your trip. I put a lot of faith in their food suggestions. We were very satisfied with the guide's Las Vegas buffet recommendation.Prior to buying I had loaned the previous edition, 2009, from my local library. I found that not much of the information had changed.Grand Canyon section of the book was 1 paragraph long. I would supplement your Vegas trip w/ Frommer's Grand Canyon guide if you are planning to make the visit.
